Peanuts are known as nuts but are legumes. Work the fertilizer into the top 4-5 inches of the soil 2-3 weeks before planting. Use a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Peanuts are a heavy calcium feeder; May need to apply calcium by dusting the plants with gypsum when they are in full bloom. Shallow cultivation is fine until they begin to bloom. After that, don't disturb the plants as the peanuts are just below the soil's surface. Water regularly. When plants are 12 inches tall, mound soil around the base of the plants and mulch. This will discourage weeds and retain moisture. To harvest, carefully dig down beside the plant and remove the peanuts. Peanuts are ready to harvest when hulls are dark inside, not white.
