Comments: Tender & juicy. Small, dark tops are sweet & edible. Tolerant to downy mildew. Resists bolting. Ruby red in color. Smooth skin. In hot, dry weather, water enough to keep the soil moist & prevent plants from wilting. Plant in 2-3 week intervals to ensure a constant supply. For tasty beets harvest when roots are less the 2 inches across. Young beet roots and leaves are mild tasting. As beets mature, the flavor becomes stronger. Beets lose their color if peeled before cooking so cook them in their skins with a couple inches of stem on the root. A little vinegar or lemon juice added to the cooking water helps retain color too. Apply a 10-10-10 fertilizer in the top 4-5 inches of soil prior to planting. Mulch with straw or hay to eliminate weed chores; retains moisture too.

Cylindra Beets
Reviewed By: Cathy Blauhorn (Archer, NE)
I grew these beets in my Midwestern, sandy soil. They produced really well in our hot dry climate. They tasted great. I loved the even cylinder shape for evenly sized discs for frying and pickling. I do feel however, that I prefer standard shaped beets for canning because there is more vegetable in the globe shaped varieties.
